Under a new ordinance adopted this year, Barrington has issued permits allowing four borough residents to keep chickens in their backyards, borough Clerk Terry Shannon said.
Under Article VII of Chapter 48 of the borough code, adopted May 12, the ordinance allows for a pilot program in which residents may keep up to four hens — but no roosters. The pilot program will expire June 30, unless it is permanently adopted by the borough.
In order to keep chickens, a resident must secure an annual license from the borough at a cost of $10, and must abide by specific conditions regarding placement of coops and proximity to human habitation.
Since the ordinance went into effect, four borough residents have received the necessary permits to keep the birds in their yards.
